Suppan Contemporary Wien

SUPPAN FINE ARTS, established in 1974, specializes in primarily European 20th Century & Contemporary Art. In the early years the focus was particularly on Austrian impressionism, expressionism and inter-war painting such as Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka, Gustav Klimt, Marie Egner, Alfred Zoff, Alfons Walde or Josef Floch. Throughout the years, international positions like Victor Vasarely, Herbert Bayer, Wolfgang Paalen, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Camille Pissaro have become part of the gallery program.
Since 1999, the gallery has expanded its repertoire and included representatives of Post-War & Contemporary Art as integral part of its program, including the viennese actionists Hermann Nitsch, Otto Mühl and Adolf Frohner, or others like Sigmar Polke, Arnulf Rainer or Antoni Tápies, but also vital figures of the geometric abstraction in Austria like Hildegard Joos or Florentina Pakosta, and key members of the 1960s loose artistic group ‚Wirklichkeiten‘ like Franz Ringel, Robert Zeppel-Sperl or Wolfgang Herzig.
Another essential part of our gallery program has always been the regeneration of artist’s oeuvres that have fallen into oblivion, for example with exhibitions and publications of artists including the Austrian-AmericanHerbert Bayer, one of the most important protagonists of the Bauhaus movement, or the Austrian-British Hugo Puck Dachinger, who played a pioneering role in exile art, Hildegard Joos (H+H Joos), the grande dame of geometric and constructive abstraction in Austria, but also others like Franz Ringel and Hermine Aichenegg.
Since the founding year in 1974, Suppan Fine Arts has organized nearly 200 solo and group exhibitions within their three gallery spaces, with major retrospectives like Herbert Bayer, Hans Böhler, Hugo Puck Dachinger, Marie Egner, Josef Floch, Alfred Zoff, Hildegard Joos or Hermine Aicheneɡɡ and many more.
However, the gallery has also curated and organized a number of exhibition projects in other venues, such as solo presentations by Marie Egner at the Austrian Cultural Institute in New York, Hugo Puck Dachinger at the Austrian Cultural Institute in London, or Hildegard Joos at the Künstlerhaus in Vienna, etc., as well as large group exhibitions in institutions such as the Albertina Museum in Vienna with the exhibition Painting – Austrian Artists Now, in which artists such as Maria Lassnig, Hermann Nitsch, Jürgen Messensee, Arnulf Rainer, Martha Jungwirth, Herbert Brandl and others were presented.
Numerous exhibitions with accompanying artists‘ monographs, catalogue raisonnés as well as art historically compiled catalogs belong to the standard of our gallery activity, but also the management of artist estates, the administration of artist archives and cooperation with museums and collections. Since nearly 45 years, the gallery has cooperated with major museums and collectors all over the world and has lend artworks, which have helped to realize important exhibitions. The supreme premise for the gallery is the offer of high quality works.
We are specialized in:
• Exhibition projects and accompanying publications (see exhibitions and publications)
• Creation of catalogue raisonnés & and artist monographs (see publications)
• Management of artist estates and artist archives
• Creation of valuables and certificates of authenticity
